Champions League Preview: Defending Champions Chelsea to Deal with Opening Hurdle against Juventus; Bayern Meets Valencia Once Again

Chelsea vs. Juventus: Great Challenges Await English and Italian Top Teams

Chelsea will start their campaign to defend their Champions League title against two-time winner and Serie A Scudetto holders Juventus. Roberto di Matteo, manager of The Blues, will be wary of their difficult opening challenge in their title defence this season. Massimo Carrera, standing in behalf of suspended manager Antonio Conte, welcomes his side’s opening challenge against the champions of the tournament.

Saying that Chelsea will try to fulfil the “impossible” challenge of defending their title, di Matteo recognizes the highly competitive nature of the competition. He added that their placement in Group E, alongside domestic champions Shakhtar Donetsk of Ukraine and Nordsjaelland of Denmark, makes their challenge much more difficult.

Carrera ensured that his side is properly oriented on the techniques that they will execute against 2011-12 winners Chelsea. Calling their Chelsea fixture as a “big test”, Juventus is out to seek their third Champions League title amidst the Calcioscommesse scandal that caused their manager Conte’s 10-month suspension.

John Terry, John Obi Mikel and Juan Mata will be playing for Chelsea after recovering from their respective injuries. Juventus will not see Simone Pepe and Simone Padoin play at Stamford Bridge. Despite their 42-game undefeated run at the Serie A, their lack of a formidable strike force remains their key problem.

Bayern Munich vs. Valencia: Meeting at This Year’s Group Opener since Their 2001 Final

Bayern Munich will play host to their 2001 final opponent Valencia. Bayern, who reached the final last season but lost to eventual winners Chelsea, will strive to make a comeback following their favourable form in this season’s Bundesliga. Both managers – Jupp Heynckes of Bayern and Mauricio Pellegrino of Valencia, ensured that their respective sides do not hold any grudges on their 2001 final anymore.

Heynckes recognize the strength of Valencia’s current line-up, which he considers a great challenge for their campaign. He claims that his side does not think of their defeat to Chelsea last season, noting that playing their best games, without talking about next year’s final for the meantime, remain their current focus.

Pellegrino is wary that giving Bayern too much respect might cause them to commit mistakes – even small ones that can cost their chances. He remains concentrated on Valencia’s chances in the tournament, despite their intimidating contest against Bayern.

New signing Javi Martinez will appear for the team on Thursday, while Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery have confirmed their availability for the match. Striker Mario Gomez remains sidelined due to injuries, prompting Mario Mandzukic to make another starting role for the team.

Lille vs BATE Borisov Preview

Football News: Lille

Lille forward Salomon Kalou believes there is no substitute for hard work as he prepares to line-up against BATE Borisov in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
Kalou was part of the Chelsea squad which won the tournament last season but joined Lille over the summer when he was not offered a new deal at Stamford Bridge.
The Ivory Coast international is now looking forward to another European campaign and is believes it is difficult to explain the facets required to win the tournament.
"A recipe to win the Champions League? It's complicated," he said.
"With Chelsea we decided to close the door (defensively) and build on the strength of our attackers. The goal is to get the first points - but just because we are not favorites (for the competition) does not mean we can't go far go far, working hard is the only way to win this tournament."
A victory on Wednesday could be seen as essential for Rudi Garcia's side with tougher fixtures against Valencia and Bayern Munich to come.
Kalou is therefore targeting a winning start against the perennial Belarusian Premier League champions at the Grand Stade Lille Metropole, although he is not underestimating the opposition.
He said: "Tomorrow [Wednesday] we will do everything to grab the three points. It is important to start the competition. Being the favorites does not mean anything.
"The Champions League is a competition in which all teams are equal. No fixture is ever easy."
Borisov have won their domestic title for the last six years and currently occupy top spot again with 20 matches already played.
They took two points during the group stages of last season's Champions League, including a memorable 1-1 draw at home to Italian giants AC Milan.
Viktor Goncharenko's side have already beaten Vardar of Macedonia, Hungarian outfit Debrecen and Israel's Ironi Kiryat Shmona just to qualify for the group stages this year.

Tuesday

Ancelotti: PSG isn't Champions League favorite

PARIS (AP) — Paris Saint-Germain coach Carlo Ancelotti is playing down expectations ahead of Tuesday's Champions League opener against Dynamo Kiev, despite a massive outlay on new players having thrust the ambitious club firmly into the spotlight.

PSG's bid to become a European power has caught the headlines after a spending spree of nearly €160 million to recruit Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Ezequiel Lavezzi and Thiago Silva from Serie A among other signings.

But Ancelotti, who won the Champions League with AC Milan as both a player and a coach, wants to take the pressure off his expensive squad. "I don't think we can say today that PSG is the favorite. I think we can say that PSG has a lot of ambition and wants to do well in the biggest competition in Europe," Ancelotti said Monday at a news conference. "We have players with experience and we have a coach who has a lot of experience. It's difficult to say what PSG can do in the Champions League. We will learn match by match."

After beginning the season with three straight draws, PSG has won its last two matches, including a 2-0 win against Toulouse on Friday in which Ibrahimovic scored his fifth goal of the season. The imposing Sweden striker has yet to win the Champions League in a career in which he has also played for Inter Milan, Ajax and Barcelona.

"My feelings haven't changed. I want to win it because every trophy I play in I want to win," Ibrahimovic said. "A lot of people spoke about the club this summer because of the transfers. We have a very solid team that can go far."

Ibrahimovic played down his sudden departure from Milan despite finishing as Serie A's top scorer last season. "Milan's a big club, I'm just another player who came and went," he said. With Ibrahimovic leading the attack, PSG will be expected to win a Group A that also features Porto and Dinamo Zagreb. The Croatian side hosts Porto on Tuesday.

Silva is expected to make his long-awaited debut at center back and will likely play alongside countryman Alex, after France center half Mamadou Sakho was ruled out with a thigh injury. "I'm very disappointed not to play tomorrow," Sakho said. "It meant so much to me, but I felt a small pain in my thigh the last time I played and, along with the medical staff, we decided not to take any risks."
Ibrahimovic he has settled in quickly, but moreimportantly for Ancelotti, the defense is getting stronger. "In four matches, we have conceded only one goal, and that was from a set piece situation," Ancelotti said.

Much is expected of PSG this season. But it is already six points behind French leader Marseille, which has won all five of its matches despite selling key players, rather than recruiting superstars. PSG last played in the Champions League eight years ago, where it went out in the group stage after losing at home to Chelsea and CSKA Moscow.

Dynamo won 3-1 on Friday against Karpaty, with midfielder Nico Kranjcar scoring twice. Dynamo knocked PSG out of the UEFA Cup quarterfinals three years ago, but everything has changed at PSG since then, with new owners from Qatar investing more than €260 million on transfers overall since taking over in June of last year.

Although PSG is heavily fancied, Dynamo defender Taras Mykhalyk says his team is in a "fighting mood" and should take inspiration from Ukraine's 1-1 draw away to England last week. "Ukraine took the ball at Wembley and started to dominate in ball control," he said. "We mustn't be afraid when we take the pitch to play in Paris."

Meanwhile, Dinamo Zagreb will hope for better fortune than in last year's Champions League — although it could hardly do worse. Dinamo lost all its matches in the group stage, conceding 22 goals — including seven in an embarrassing home thrashing by Lyon.

"We are outsiders, but we will do our best not to lose," Dinamo coach Ante Cacic said. Dinamo is top of the league and dropped points for only the second time this season when it drew 0-0 at home to Osijek on Friday.

The draw also put an end to a formidable run of 11 consecutive wins, with Brazilian Sammir chipping in with eight goals from midfield during that spell. Porto's attack, meanwhile, is not the same since Hulk left to join Zenit St. Petersburg two weeks ago, despite the club insisting that he would stay.

Manchester United faces threat from speculators

Manchester United may have got off to a solid start on the field this season, but increasing numbers of investors are taking a less positive view of the club’s performance off the field.
Two great rivals Liverpool and Manchester United must put on genuine show of solidarity

Almost 11pc of the shares sold in Manchester United’s controversial $2.9bn (£1.8bn) flotation last month are now in the hands of investors looking to profit from a slide in the company’s stock - so called shorting - according to Markit.
That amount has more than doubled from the days immediately after the initial public offering in New York.
News of the shorting comes as the company prepares today to report fourth quarter profits, its first set of tradng figures since the float.
The number of shares shorted will add to some fans’ concern over the flotation.
Manchester United’s Supporters Trust has criticised the IPO because not all of the $233m raised was targeted at paying down the club’s debts which stand at more than £430m.
“It’s a story that is interesting to short sellers,” said Simon Colvin, an analyst at Markit. “People have ingested the current situation of a highly leveraged sports team that is open to the whims of the football season.”
The US-based Glazer family, which used the IPO to sell about 10pc of the club they acquired for £790m in 2005, opted for a flotation just as Manchester United faces increasing competition for domestic trophies from local rival Manchester City, and for the European Cup from the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid.
Mr Colvin said that the the volume of shares available for short-sellers to borrow has risen as investors at the IPO allocate a portion of their holdings to the lending programmes speculators can tap in to.
Companies in the S&P 500 have an average 3.4pc of their shares in the hands of short-sellers, says Markit.
Short-sellers borrow shares and then sell them in the hope the price will fall. They make money by buying back the shares at a lower price, returning the shares to the original owner and then pocketing the difference.
Shares in Manchester United stood at $12.575 in early trading in New York, some 10.2pc down on the company’s flotation price of of $14.
Manchester United declined to comment.

Tottenham Secures First Win of the League Season; Man City Stuck in Draw

Tottenham Hotspurs surged to grab their first win of this season’s Premier League over newly promoted side Reading. The hosts were defeated 1-3 in light of criticisms hounding Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas.

Jermain Defoe opened the scoring for Spurs after uninterruptedly running across 50 yards, reflecting Reading’s lack of prowess in grabbing possession. Gareth Bale added a second one for the club several minutes after their first goal. Minutes after, Defoe brought in another goal.

Villas-Boas’ apparent frustration over winning a match for the Spurs ended after the relieving victory. Apart from Defoe’s impressive goals roundup, the club exhibited a powerful midfield operated by Sandro, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Moussa Dembele.

As Reading was playign against tough oponnent side Spurs, the home crowd’s anticipation was broken down to disappointment after failing to create many opportunities.  The visitors’ threatening goal attempts and their 25-day gameless stretch proved to be their greatest setbacks throughout the match.

Meanwhile, Manchester City failed to secure victory after a 1-1 draw to hosts Stoke City held them once more, leaving the defending league champions winless at the Britannia stadium for the sixth time.

Stoke’s Peter Crouch opened the scoring on the 15th minute through a contentious shot that was not called off due to ball handling. City manager Roberto Mancini angrily responded and called it a “basketball goal”.

City was poised to win the match, especially when a free kick from Carlos Tevez passed on to Javi Garcia, who slotted the ball through an equalizing header. Another opportunity that could have given them the lead was thwarted when a shot by Edin Dzeko failed to get past through centre-back Ryan Shawcross.

While City pressed intimidating chances from Yaya Toure, Mario Balotelli and Tevez, Asmir Begovic stood firm in his ground as Stoke’s keeper.  The visitors were lacking a formidable score force in the form of Sergio Aguero, who joined them in training after sustaining a knee injury.

Arsenal Prepares New Contract for Manager Arsene Wenger

Arsenal’s long-time manager Arsene Wenger is bound to receive a new contract from the club. The club made the decision despite another failed effort to win the Premier League title last season, which stretched their title drought to seven years as they clinched the third spot with Manchester United and champions Manchester City leading in the tables

The move appears to be an affirmation of the moniker “In Arsene We Trust”, which is a popular slogan among Arsenal fans. Currently, Wenger is facing a challenge to lead the club in light of high-profile departures of ex-captain Robin van Persie to Manchester United and Alex Song to Barcelona. New signings Lukas Podolski, Olivier Giroud and Santi Cazorla replaced the duo.

Wenger’s current contract lasts until 2014. Speculations that the manager will leave Arsenal once his deal expires have been widespread. Ivan Gazidis, chief executive of The Gunners, stays firm in his stand that the Frenchman knows best in leading the club to title victories.

Saying that he is highly satisfied with the way Arsenal is moving forward, Gazidis affirmed that Wenger is the man they need to spearhead the club’s progress. He called the manager an “incredible man who loves [Arsenal]”.

Apart from van Persie and Song’s exits, Arsenal suffered the transfers of big-name players prior to 2011-12. Former captain Cesc Fabregas moved to Barcelona. Samir Nasri and Gael Clichy played for Manchester City to win the title in their first season with the club.

Gazidis acknowledged that they are concerned with the club not winning a league trophy since 2004. He followed up with assurance that they are doing their best in playign against tough oponnent sides to win titles this year.

The chief executive fended off accusations that the board is satisfied with just top-four league finishes. He added that they are trying to win using “a certain way of playing football that [the club takes] pride in”.

Sports Tips [SOCCER]: Premier League 2012-13 Manchester United vs. Wigan Athletic

BET FOR WIGAN ATHLETIC @ 1.600 WITH 2.0 HANDICAP!

Manchester United will face Wigan Athletic at home when the Premier League resumes on September 15. This match will be crucial for both sides, as The Red Devils plan to top rivals Chelsea and Manchester City and The Latics are on the move to secure their side away from another relegation threat.

Match Preview

 HEAD-TO-HEAD COMPARISON (Last Five Matches)
2011-12 Premier League (April 12, 2012)
Manchester United    0-1    Wigan Athletic
2011-12 Premier League (December 26, 2011)

Manchester United    2-0    Wigan Athletic
2009-10 Premier League (December 31, 2009)
Manchester United    5-0    Wigan Athletic

When United play Wigan on Saturday, they might not feature key new signings Robin van Persie and Shinji Kagawa, as both suffered minor injuries while on their international duties for the 2014 World Cup qualifiers. Van Persie incurred a thigh injury while playing for the Netherlands in their 4-1 win against Hungary. Kagawa withdrew from Japan’s 1-0 against Iraq due to back pain sustained from training.

While United have played their best in their last two games with the help of van Persie and Kagawa, they face the risk of downgrading when they face Wigan in their absence. Danny Welbeck and Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez are suitable replacements, though they have yet to prove their current form as starters for the club this season. Wayne Rooney’s absence is another blow to the club as he is set to spend time on the sidelines for up to two months.

Wigan Athletic will be playign against tough oponnent United, but with a stronger force due to the satisfactory forms of ex-Chelsea striker Franco di Santo, midfielders Shaun Maloney and James McArthur. While they lost to United by 16 goals in four out of their last five matches, they caught the Red Devils by surprise 1-0 in their previous encounter in April last season. A weaker United squad will give ample goal opportunities for Wigan.

A close game is highly possible between the two sides, with Manchester United poised to win at 2-1. Handicap bets would mean a win for Wigan by one goal (see Full Time Handicap below for reference).

Hodgson: Sterling Told To Remain Realistic After Surprise National Call-Up

England national team manager Roy Hodgson said that his decision to call up 17-year old Raheem Sterling for their upcoming fixture against Ukraine is approved after talks with the winger's Liverpool manager, Brendan Rodgers.

Rodgers earlier announced that he will not allow Sterling to accept the call-up from the national Under-21 team, saying that it is better for him to stay with the Under-19s. His senior team call-up is due to Theo Walcott and Daniel Sturridge's unavailability due to illness.

Monday

Arsenal Manager Arsene Wenger Suggests Spending Controls for Premier League Clubs; Manchester United Striker Wayne Rooney Open to Playing As Midfielder

Joey Barton, who transferred from Queens Park Rangers to Ligue 1 club Olympique de Marseille, will not have the outstanding portion of his match ban relinquished on his new club. The midfielder stirred trouble in QPR while playign against tough oponnent side and eventual champions Manchester City in their final match last season. He got a red card and quarrelled against Sergio Aguero and Vincent Kompany.

According to FIFA rules, remaining punishments on players shall continue to have effect even if the player has transferred to another club. The French League approved that the rule applies to France and announced in an official statement that Barton will not be able to play for the league until November.

Barton is a known controversial figure who has previous records of participating in violent confrontations. He will debut for the club in a September 20 away Europa League match against Turkish club Fenerbahce.

Meanwhile, Arsenal defender Bacary Sagna expressed his shock on the departure of his teammate, defensive midfielder Alex Song. He said that he never expected Song to follow striker Robin van Persie’s departure – one that he calls a predictable one within the team.

Sagna, presently recovering from injuries, has appeared in 153 Arsenal matches since 2007. Apart from expressing his disbelief on the transfer of Song, he noted that he was envious of Manchester City’s title victory last season, which featured his former teammates Gael Clichy and Samir Nasri. He added that he has not yet signed an improved deal with the club.

Chelsea defender Ashley Cole is currently in talks on a new agreement with the club. His contract is nearing expiration next summer and The Blues are reportedly keen on extending his stay for another year.

Cole, resting his injured ankle, has not reached any terms yet on an improved financial package from Chelsea. The England international’s talent has become a magnet for past transfer reports, including one that involved Real Madrid.

Liverpool Manager Brendan Rodgers Asked FA to Stop Raheem Sterling’s Promotion to England’s Under-21 Team

Raheem Sterling is a rising star in Liverpool, having recorded impressive showings in his first two matches with the club as a starter. While several observers duly recognize his inspiring efforts, manager Brendan Rodgers is wary on the winger’s rapid rise to fame.

Now, the manager has asked the FA to stop their plan to promote Sterling to England’s Under-21 team. The former Queens Park Rangers trainee gained recognition for his brave presence while playign against tough oponnent sides Manchester City and Arsenal, replacing the starting position of £20 million signing Stewart Downing.  Rodgers is seeking to tone down the winger’s exposure in light of his sudden popularity by suggesting that the player should stay with the Under-19 team first.

Rodgers noted that postponing Sterling’s Under-21 promotion would benefit the player greatly. While he is aware that the promotion provides a great boost to the winger’s record, he finds it best for him to continue with the Under-19 team to prevent carrying the burden of too much expectation from people. He wants the player to maintain his great training form without being distracted with too much pressure

The manager said that the decision to keep Sterling out of the Under-21 team is rooted on meeting player’s “individual needs”. He wants to preserve the “quality, courage and attitude” of the winger in playing intact, which is why he chose to keep him away from anything that might bring more pressure.

With a vast experience in training youth teams of Chelsea and Reading, Rodgers has effectively built his knowledge on managing young players. The manager is aware that Sterling, like most young players with great talent, can rise up hastily. Saying that young players need careful handling, he is conscious that the winger might not become fully fit in the future anymore if he gets early exposure to high expectations.

Dimitar Berbatov Displeased At Man Utd’s Ferguson

Former Bulgarian national team captain Dimitar Berbatov left Premier League side Manchester United to secure a £5 million-worth transfer to Fulham.

Berbatov sent his goodbyes to his former teammates at United following his release. He did not give the same polite treatment to manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who he criticised for giving him unfair treatment at the club last season.

Arsenal Gain First Win Over Weak Liverpool Side

Arsenal’s road towards impressive football predictions for this season’s Premier League look more assured as they dealt with a downtrodden Liverpool squad in a 2-0 victory.

The clean sheet gave recognition to Arsenal’s Robin van Persie replacements Lukas Podolski and Santi Cazorla, with both scoring their first goals for the club following their first two goalless draws. Abou Diaby kept impressive control of the midfield, to the delight of manager Arsene Wenger.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers faces more pressure in light of another disappointing defeat at the start of the season. Striker Andy Carroll’s West Ham United loan transfer placed the manager under further stress after his club failed to bring in a replacement before the closing of the transfer window.
