Former Bulgarian national team captain Dimitar Berbatov left Premier League side Manchester United to secure a £5 million-worth transfer to Fulham.
Berbatov sent his goodbyes to his former teammates at United following his release. He did not give the same polite treatment to manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who he criticised for giving him unfair treatment at the club last season.
The ex-Footballer of the Year of Bulgaria said that he “lost his respect” to Ferguson after denying him of several chances to be in the first XI in fixtures during the previous league season. He noted that while the manager kept on reassuring him of his importance to United, he rarely figured in first-team appearances.
Berbatov’s final season in United is in stark contrast to his early days at the Old Trafford club. A £30.75 million transferee from London outfit Tottenham Hotspurs, he scored the most goals of the season in 2010-11. He did not appear as a starter for the 2011 Champions League final of the club against Barcelona and was practically missing in most league matches in 2011-12.
While the entry of prominent signings Robin van Persie from Arsenal and Shinji Kagawa from Borussia Dortmund appeared to have further diminished Berbatov’s hopes of starting for United, he pointed out Ferguson’s decision to change his playing style to a fast-paced one as a major factor for his departure. His coexistence with other fast strikers Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck and Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez made it more difficult for him to earn a starting position
Last Saturday, Berbatov made his first appearance for Fulham, who was playignagainst tough oponnent West Ham United that resulted to a 3-0 loss. He faced controversy over the summer, as he dealt with a furious Fiorentina whose deal he refused to sign. The striker denied a subsequent offer from another Serie A club, Juventus.
