Demba Ba hit a hat-trick as Newcastle United beat Stoke City to move up to third in the Barclays Premier League.
The visitors took the lead on 12 minutes when Gabriel Obertan's inviting cross into the six-yard area picked out Ba - who would have joined the Potters in January had he not failed a medical - and the Senegal international nodded home his sixth Barclays Premier League goal in five matches.
The Magpies doubled their lead five minutes before the interval when Matthew Upson could only help Fabricio Coloccini's lofted pass on to Leon Best on the right of the penalty area and he crossed low for Ba to tap in his second.
Stoke were handed a lifeline 15 minutes from time when Ba was judged to have pushed Peter Crouch in the box and Jon Walters slammed home the penalty.
But six minutes later the Magpies were awarded a spot-kick of their own for a similar push by Robert Huth on Best, allowing Ba to complete his treble and maintain the Magpies' unbeaten start to the Barclays Premier League season. - http://www.premierleague.com
