Copa America 2011 Chile vs Peru Result

Stoppage Time Own Goal Gives Chile 1-0 Win

Neither Chile or Peru played to their best tonight, but in the end, something resembling justice was served as Chile won 1-0 on a stoppage time own goal that required a bit of luck. Chile were the better side all night, but they started with most of their stars on the bench, implying that they either felt they needed to rest their stars or that this match would be easy. It wasn't, but in the end they did enough to grab three points, winning the group and avoiding a date with Argentina.

Even though there was a goal in the match, the biggest event occurred well before the goal, in the 62nd minute. After Cristian Ramos fouled Alexis Sanchez, who did not start the game and came on as a substitute, a scrum ensued that resulted in a couple of sendings off. Chilean Jean Beausejour was shown a straight red card for his part in the altercation, while Giancarlo Carmona was shown a second yellow. Both teams would have to play the remainder of the match with ten men.

It looked like a draw was on the cards until the very last minute, when a corner kick from Chile
deflected off the back of a Peruvian defender into the back of the net, giving Chile the goal they
needed to win the match and the group. Peru know that they're through to the next round, but
whether or not they will go through in second or third place depends on the result of the second
match of the night, between Uruguay and Mexico.
