Uruguay has defeated Mexico to finish second in Group C and qualify for the quarterfinals, where they will face Argentina.
Uruguay are through to the quarterfinals of the 2011 Copa America after defeating Mexico by a final score of 1-0, sending El Tri's sub-22 side back home in time for the start of the Mexican Primera season, but it could have been much worse for the underdogs. Mexico were well and truly beaten by Uruguay, but stars Luis Suarez and Diego Forlan just didn't have their shooting boots on. Neither scored, when they could have easily had six goals between them. The lone goal scorer was Alvaro Pereira, who tapped in a poacher's effort off of a free kick and a Luis Michel error.
Still, there's a slight sense of injustice around the final result for a couple of reasons. One, because Mexico had a good goal disallowed. In the second half, Rafael Marquez Lugo scored for El Tri, but his goal was ruled offside. Marquez was not, in fact, offside. That goal could have been the catalyst that got Mexico back into the game, but it wasn't to be.
The second reason is because Uruguay's win doesn't set them up with any kind of reward. Had Marquez's equalizer stood and the game finished at 1-1, that would have been a better result for Uruguay.
